Introduction

The NUS Medical Society Careers Directorate aims to empower medical students to achieve their intended career goals via mentorship, education and networking opportunities. Careers Directorate hopes to arm medical students with more knowledge with regards to post-graduate training and employment opportunities to help them make informed decisions about their future career pathways.

Initiatives

Careers Symposium

Careers Symposium is our annual event where we invite doctors from the private and public sectors, and different healthcare clusters, to share about their careers with medical students.

The aims of Careers Symposium are as follows:

Provide a platform for students to explore a variety of career opportunities.
Provide centralised information and clarify myths and misconceptions
Help students understand the ever changing healthcare landscape
Equip students with more knowledge on how to become a good, holistic doctor, with skills in both clinical and non-clinical domains

M5-HO Engagement Session

The M5-House Officer (HO) Engagement session is held annually to help the M5s achieve a greater sense of clarity about their HO work life. It is a platform for the M5s to express concerns and clarify misconceptions with the help of current House Officers as well as learn more about the various HO postings at the different healthcare institutions and how to prepare themselves better to overcome the challenges/obstacles in their HO year.

Careers Digest

Careers Digest aims to be an exciting and engaging resource for medical students to refer to with regards to careers-related information. This magazine serves as an opportunity for doctors to share information they deem beneficial for medical students' careers. It also provides medical students with a plethora of information regarding the possible careers they can embark on post-graduation.

What Happened in 2019/20

Careers Symposium 2020

An annual event which brings together the different healthcare clusters in providing centralised information to students. The Symposium wishes to help students in exploring diverse career opportunities, gaining knowledge on becoming a holistic and competent doctor, being well-informed of the medico-legal climate and, finally, achieving a good work-life balance. Due to COVID-19, the event was brought online as well—the Careers Directorate is extremely grateful to all the doctors who lent us their precious time to share their advice and experiences, and the students who supported the Symposium.

Careers Exploration 2020

A series of online sharing sessions by speakers in niche medical fields. The talks provided insights into specialised fields, such as aviation, hyperbaric, rehabilitative, sports and occupational medicine, and gave students the opportunity to clarify any questions and seek advice on building the relevant skills needed.

Careers Magazine

The inaugural edition of the Careers Magazine was published in 2019/20, and led on to multiple issues being released the same year. The Careers Magazine hopes to provide a regular stream of information regarding career issues and topics of interest, whilst being a fun and enjoyable read for students.
