76th NUS Medical Society Annual General Meeting

The 76th NUS MedSoc AGM was graced by Dean, Professor Chong Yap Seng, as well as other prominent faculty members, staff advisors, and students.

On Friday, 27 September 2024, the NUS Medical Society held its 76th Annual General Meeting (AGM). The night started with an opening address by our Guest-of-Honour, Prof. Chong Yap Seng, Dean of NUS Medicine. Prof. Chong commended MedSoc for its dedication and efforts in the past term; taking up the mantle to serve and represent NUS Medicine students while juggling our studies and other life commitments. His parting message to the 75th MedSoc Exco was to “Always dream big and look far but remember to learn from the past.", something that the future batches of MedSoc will continue to emulate.

This was followed by the presentation of the MedSoc Colours Awards, which are given to MedSoc directorate members who have made extraordinary contributions towards their directorate, and by extension, NUS MedSoc in the past year.

The awards were presented by outgoing president Mr Aravind Madabhushi, who emphasised that whatever MedSoc has done over the past year would not be possible towards them, and that their support need not come only in the form of the work done in their respective directorates, but even the social support they provided their directors throughout their term by being a reliable and trusted teammate.

Mr Sagar Sharma delivering his State of the Society Address to the crowd.

This was followed by a closing address delivered by Mr Sagar Sharma, Vice-President of the 75th Medical Society, on behalf of the entire committee. In his address regarding the State of the Society, Sagar highlighted key events that MedSoc played a pivotal role in organising, as well as the impact that these events had on student life. Special mention was given to events such as Seniors’ Night and the Inter-House Games, which were events newly (re)-initiated by the 75th MedSoc. He also reflected on his past 2 years as part of the MedSoc executive committee, and shared that his closest friends and fondest memories in medical school were made during some of these MedSoc events, and urged the juniors to continue giving back to the student body. Sagar concluded by thanking all his peers in the 75th MedSoc Exco, and wished the 76th Exco the best of luck for their year ahead.

This was followed by the official handover ceremony, where the 75th MedSoc Exco leaders passed the baton on to the 76th. Once the 76th Medical Society Exco was officially invested into office, the 76th NUS Medical Society President Mr Aravind Madabhushi led the newly minted committee in the oath taking. This was followed by the incoming President’s address, where Aravind shared that his committee will look toward the past and try to emulate and continue the good work MedSoc has been doing, focus on running events and fighting for things that the students want in the present, while also building relationships for the future of the NUS Medical Society.

To end off the night, Aravind then delivered the Annual Report on the Christine Chong Hui Xian bursary. On top of sharing the story behind the bursary, Aravind also highlighted how the bursary has benefitted medical students in need of financial support over the past 11 years, having awarded over 150 bursary awards, with another 32 awards to be given out in the upcoming year. He also shared excerpts from the bursary recipients, where they expressed their gratitude towards the bursary to allow them to continue fulfilling their passions.

This was followed by the Annual NUS Medical Society Treasury updates, where the 75th Medical Society Treasurer Mr Tobias Teo shared the financial reports from the previous financial year.
